Description

This image shows four women playing different musical instruments: transverse flute, koto (zither), gekkin (circular lute), and shamisen (three-stringed instrument) In the background are other stringed instruments, a vase of flowers, and a hanging scroll. Turner has added the inscriptions, "Japanese musical instruments," "The 'fue'-fife," "The 'Koto' 13 strings," "The 'gekkin' 4 strings," and "The 'samisen' 3 strings."
