Interior of Sanjûsangendô Temple, Kyoto. The temple enshrines the thousand statues of Kannon (the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara) The photographer has labelled the print "H191. Idols in Sanjusangendo, Kioto." Turner's inscription: "1000 life size images at Kyoto--goddess Kwannon--of mercy. Each image contains 40 hands, each hand is supposed to be able to do 25 deeds of mercy, hence (25 x 100 =1000) the name "Sente Kwannon" or 1000 handed Kwannon."
