This is a photograph of the pine tree of Kenrokuen Garden, in Sakamoto, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Turner has added the inscription, "Pine tree at Karasaki, one of the most curious in the world. Length of branches, from N. to S. 288 ft., No. of branches 380." In a separate column on the left he as added, "Height---90 ft., Cir. of trunk 37 '', length of branches from E. to W. 240 ft." There is a label from the photographer with an inscription in Japanese "近江唐崎 (Ômi Karasaki) and English, "KARASAKI. IN AUMI." ("Aumi" is an alternate romanization of Ômi ).The number 196 is handwritten on the print.
