Description

This is a Japanese figurine purchased in Kobe, Japan and brought to Atlanta in 1894. The name of the artist and city of origin are unknown, but the craftsmanship of the object suggests the artist was not of high rank; this is also seen in the lack of a signature on the piece. While the Kobe Collection has a figurine of Gama Sennin that appears to be made by the same artist, the Old Farmer figurine does not resemble any of the other Taoist Eight Immortals. It is unknown if the Old Farmer was meant to resemble a particular historical, religious, or folk figure.
