An image of a group of Ainu people from the island of Ezo, later renamed Hokkaido. Turner has added the inscription, "These are Ainos or Ainus-the aborigines of the Japanese islands. There are now about 17000 of them all living in the northern island of Yezo. The men resemble the Jews; and like many other peoples, 'they are supposed to be the lost tribes of Israel.'"
