Description
A woman spins silk on a manual wheel in a posed studio picture. In the foreground are a mass of cotton wool, a tobacco pipe, and a smoking box. Turner has added the inscription "She layeth her hands to the spindle," a Biblical quotation (Proverbs 31:19, King James Version).
