Description

This print shows the exterior of the Kobe Club (earlier called the Union Club or the International Club), a social club founded by British and Americans in 1869. The building shown in this photograph was completed in 1890. The photographer has labeled the print "H97. Kobe Club." Turner has added the inscription "There are only 670 foreigners (not counting Chinese) in Kobe, but this is what they can afford in the way of club life. But it is not for missionaries."
