Description

This print shows the Grand Hotel in Yokohama designed by French architect P. Sarda and completed in 1887. The back of the building looked out onto the Bund, while the main entrance faced Mizumachi Street, seen in this print. The hotel was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The photographer has labelled the print, "A 88 Grand Hotel Yokohama." Turner has added the inscription, "Owned + run by the English; said to be the best foreign hotel in the Far East'."
