Notes

This print shows the front of the Yômeimon Gate at the Tôshôgû Shrine. The symbol of the shrine, the gate displays the craftsmanship and decorative techniques of the early Edo Period. There are 508 carvings on the gate and include people, animals -real and imaginary-, flowers, birds, and geometric patterns. The Yômeimon Gate is said to have been given the name “Main Gate of the Imperial Court,” and is also called “Gate of the Setting Sun.” The photographer has labelled the print "15. Yomeimon Gate, at Nikko." It should be noted that many tinted photographs of this gate differ greatly in color and thus do not accurately reflect the original appearance.
