Notes
Two girls are sitting at desks, copying hiragana (native Japanese syllabary) characters. The elderly man posing as their teacher is sitting on the right is sitting in front of a desk on which are books and writing tools. Behind them are a painted hanging scroll, folding screen, and vase of flowers, Turner has labelled this image: "Learning the art of writing. A hair brush is used instead of a pen."
